How to Replace Control Arm on Ford Focus

Replacing the control arm on your Ford Focus is a crucial maintenance task that ensures optimal handling and stability. Whether you're experiencing vibrations, steering issues, or worn-out bushings, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of replacing the control arm on your Ford Focus with ease.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Parts

Before you begin, make sure you have all the tools and parts required for the job. You'll need:

  - Jack and jack stands

  - Lug wrench

  - Socket set

  - Wrench set

  - Ball joint separator

  - New Ford Focus control arm (ensure it's compatible with your Ford Focus model)

 Prepare Your Vehicle

Park your Ford Focus on a flat, level surface and engage the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels but don't remove them completely. Place the jack under the vehicle's frame and lift it until the wheels are off the ground. Secure the vehicle with jack stands for added safety.

 Remove the Wheel and Caliper

Once the vehicle is safely elevated, remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheel. Next, locate the brake caliper and remove the bolts securing it to the steering knuckle. Hang the caliper using a wire hanger or zip tie to prevent damage to the brake line.

 Disconnect the Ball Joint

Locate the ball joint where the control arm connects to the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint separator to disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle. This may require some force, so be patient and work carefully to avoid damaging surrounding components.

 Remove the Control Arm

With the ball joint disconnected, locate the bolts securing the control arm to the frame. Use a socket set to loosen and remove these bolts, then carefully maneuver the old control arm out of its mounting position. Be mindful of any attached components or wiring harnesses that may interfere with removal.

 Install the New Control Arm

Before installing the new control arm, compare it with the old one to ensure they match in size and configuration. Position the new control arm in place and insert the bolts through the mounting holes. Tighten the bolts securely using a wrench or socket set.

Reconnect the Ball Joint and Caliper

Once the new control arm is securely in place, reattach the ball joint to the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator. Then, reinstall the brake caliper onto the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

 Reassemble and Test

With the control arm replaced and all components reattached, reinstall the front wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and remove the jack. Finally, test drive your Ford Focus to ensure everything is functioning correctly and that there are no unusual noises or vibrations.

Replacing the control arm on your Ford Focus is a manageable task with the right tools and knowledge. By following this step-by-step guide, you can maintain the safety and performance of your vehicle for miles to come. Remember to prioritize safety throughout the process and consult a professional if you encounter any difficulties.
